The Buchanan County Genealogical Society was formed in 1976 and is fully staffed by volunteers.

Our holdings are extensive:

  • 100,000+ obituaries printed and alphabetized
  • Original probate files 1856-1941
  • Coroners reports 1858-1960
  • Buchanan County census indexes & microfilm
  • Birth, marriage & death records
  • Naturalization records
  • Buchanan County and town history books
  • 300+ compiled family histories
  • School annuals & church directories
  • Independence & Winthrop newspapers 1856- present hardcopy & microfilm
  • Scrapbooks and some rural school records

Research requests are accepted for a nominal donation. Cash or check only.

We are located in the basement of the Independence City Hall, accessible through the east or west door of the fire station.
